Don’t stress, don’t overthink. Most of all DO NOT think you cannot use God’s remedies for yourself, your family, your community, anyone. You can start your own apothecary with ease, safely for everyone. All it takes is a little time to learn and the next generation will pick it up like it never went out of style. Herbalism is NOT rocket science! The use of plants for human health dates to the creation of man.
Genesis 1:10-13 10 God called the dry ground “land” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning-the third day.
God created herbs for us to be able to use easily. 2,000 years ago there were no labs or chemists like we have today. There were people with minimal tools, and that is still all you need to craft His remedies. You can absolutely get much fancier and more technical with Herbalism but do not let it deter or stress you out. The fact remains that people have been crafting His remedies for thousands and thousands of years the “folk” way vs 100 years of making it more “technical”. Don’t get discouraged! I encourage you to use whatever method the Holy Spirit guides you to.
They both work 100%
I will get into the energetics of herbs and yourself, how to match yourself with the herbs that will bring your body into balance. An easy example I learned from Rosalee de la Foret @herbswithrosalee, is ginger and peppermint. Both are helpful with an upset stomach but one will be better suited for you depending on your energetics whether you are hot or cold and damp or dry. You can be cold and damp, cold and dry, etc….Peppermint would be more suited for you if you were hot and dry, peppermint is cooling and moistening, therefore, it will bring your body closer to balance. You are not always one way, it can change frequently or not very often, depending on how balanced your body is.
Remember this is not all matter of fact our bodies are all different needing different things, just like there are many synthetic blood pressure medications that work differently there are many herbs that work differently for the same issue. But unlike synthetic medications that work by tricking your body for 6-24 hours, herbs are used to balance your, giving your body what it needs, leading it to correct the problem. Sometimes herbs take time to notice a difference.
An example allergies are almost always easily controlled with stinging nettle and or Mormon Tea, ephedra nevadensis part of the ephedra family but does not produce ephedra like other species, within hours or days. You will have to take it daily during allergy season but with consistent use, proper nutrition and God your body can and will correct itself. God is truly a perfectionist! My husband had horrific cottonwood allergies, used several over-the-counter and prescription allergy medications daily, and still would be miserable. After 3 years of allergy seasons passed he now only uses stinging nettle and Mormon tea once daily on high pollen count days. A general rule of thumb is if you are dealing with a chronic issue you had for 7 years you are looking at 8-9 months before you are “better” 1-2 months for herbs to affect your body and 1 month for every year of a chronic condition. It is very important to note if you are filling your body with processed and chemical-filled foods you are likely not going to see the full benefit of the herbs. Your body is too busy filtering and building poor-quality cells with synthetics when it should be regenerating, God created our bodies to last much longer.

I strive to follow like-minded believers. This is after all God’s creation. I strongly feel we need to recognize that throughout the entire process. As I discover more I will add to the list. If you don’t see your favorite Christian herbalist listed, send me a message about them, I am always looking for more.

I encourage you to pay attention to the books you are purchasing. There are gobs of useless “10 in 1 books” “inspired by books” or AI written books out there! Be CAUTIOUS! One of the best ways to get your trusted herbal books is through the Author/Herbalist directly, plus it supports them directly.

Where to buy herbs? I VERY STRONGLY encourage you to use ORGANIC only! Whatever is put on or it is growing in or nearby WILL be in your herbs. You do not want your remedies micro-dosed with poisons. Currently these are companies I will purchase from. I feel growing your own or foraging are the best options. Unfortunately, that is not possible for many people and herbs depending on your location.
Herb Companies-
Frontier Co-op Herbs/Simply Organic
Starwest Botanicals
Mountain Rose Herbs
Monterey Bay Herb Co/HERBCo
Micro Ingredients
Containers in larger quantities-
Berlin
Uline
SKS Bottle
Alibaba
Whether you are filling your apothecary for 1-2 or you are filling it for your large family and extended family and it's closer to 20 people you are not going to need special tools. Can you get fancy, absolutely! I will add links and companies I buy products from. This is my opinion part, take from it what you want. 90% of the glass you buy from Amazon is the exact same product, the exact same pictures, from the exact same factory you can buy on Temu for half the price. I choose to make my money work for me, not help to create another billionaire. Don’t want to use your banking info get a prepaid card. If you feel that is taking away US jobs take the money you saved to your local church, buy staples for your local food bank, invest it in your local community there will be many people thankful for the blessing. Basically don’t be shamed for makinGod'sg your hard-earned money work for you.
The first thing I start telling people when I hand them a bag of herbs is to start keeping jars that have quality lids you WILL need them. Most of the time I get “oh I’m not really that into herbs, but I’ll save them for you” or “I’ll just buy it from you if I need anything, I won’t use this very much” 50% of the time by the next month its “are you kidding me that’s all you do for a tincture, I can do that” or “hey so want to split a pound of Stinging Nettle and Wormwood”. Pastor hasn’t said anything to me about me slinging Gods remedies in the church kitchen between services yet…..I’ll have to keep a jar of throat soothing tea and some relax salve on hand just in case I need to smooth over a situation lol! Here is a list of tools I use on a regular basis.
JARS-
So many jars, of all sizes. You need jars for dry herbs, blended teas, tinctures, infused oils, oxymels etc.….I could not count how many jars I have.....still never enough!God's
Herb press-
Potato ricer works fantastic for pressing herbs. I occasionally put in cheesecloth before pressing but I don’t worry much about having a bit of the herb still in menstruum. Stainless steel French press works amazingly, I would avoid glass I’ve read a few horror stories. You can also just use cheesecloth, whatever works for you to get the job done, God’s remedies don’t change depending on your tools.
Funnels-
You will want metal, no plastic anything. I like having various sizes to fill 1 oz bottles up to wide mouth canning jars. You may not need so many, but I spill a lot.
Cheesecloth-
Unbleached, not treated, food safe or unbleached coffee filters, some use I think they are a pain.
Spoons-
Only wood or metal, keep the nasty chemicals away. There are a few herbs and processes you cannot use metal with, I’ll note on herb when come up.
Double boiler-
For making salves, balms, deodorant, etc.…. You can make your own with a glass bowl and soup pot or purchase.
Measuring tools-
Teaspoons, tablespoons, and measuring cups are occasionally used. I most often use a kitchen scale.
Wire mesh strainers-
I love having several sizes available. When I’m only doing a single bottle or just need a fast small refill I will use a mesh strainer.
Finished product storage-
Tincture dropper bottles always dark colored glass. I’ve heard a couple of Herbalists say only Amber no Cobalt or Green but I have yet to find, any reason why not so I still use all dark colors. I like the 1oz for travel, purse, car and whatnot, 2oz is the most common and convenient size for daily use. To store finished remedies, tinctures, oxymels, and medicinal oils etc.… I use dark-colored swing-top beer bottles. You will want some 2oz dark-colored jars for your salve-type remedies. As tempting as it may be avoid the plastic jars/bottles and metal tins, they are jam-packed with toxins. Your remedies will absorb the toxins. Don’t let not having dark glass deter you, you can use clear glass.
Blender or Mortar and Pestle-
Is not necessary but you want to break down your herbs as small as possible for maximum surface coverage right before use.
Crockpot-
I find having a large oval one and one of the mini ones is great. Check thrift stores, you will be putting jars in not your herb or oils directly. You do not need, you can do the same thing in a pot on the stove set too low, I’ve seen people use the oven. I just prefer crockpot, less babysitting.
Drying-
I like the hanging drying racks, they come in many shapes and sizes. Super easy to use and store. I occasionally use a dehydrator for herbs but not at all with flowers or greens. Mostly for the roots, bark, berries the hardier herbs. But again, you can use your oven or just hang dry all herbs. God’s remedies don’t care.
It is VERY important your herbs are organic whether used internally or externally. If you won’t eat it don’t make your skin absorb it. A huge part of using God’s healing is stopping the micro-dosing of poison in all of our food, personal care products, cleaning products, clothing etc.…. If foraging your herbs check your surroundings for pollutants. Where is the water running off from, how close to the air-dryroadside, avoiding sprayed areas etc.…I will have sections on foraging and clean eating in depth.
To keep your herbs as fresh as possible you want to thoroughly dry at 110 degrees or less. I air dry 90% of my herbs. Keep them as whole as possible and in an airtight glass away from light and heat. Under these conditions, you should expect dried flowers and greens to stay in prime use for 2-3 years, with roots, seeds, berries, bark the firm dense herbs lasting 3-4 years in prime. If herbs are purchased I would take a year off for prime condition. When ready to use you want to grind up as small as possible to have maximum surface coverage to allow plant constituents to be extracted or infused. Keep all processed remedies in glass Amber or Cobalt bottles, away from light and heat to attain the longest shelf life.
There are not a lot of herbs or mushrooms, I will include a fungi section in the future, that doing a “double extraction” is better, I will add information about a double extraction in the future. Going "heavy" on the material for extraction/infusion does not result in stronger remedies. The reason is that menstruum, any type of liquid has a maximum saturation point. If you keep adding salt to a glass of water it eventually stops dissolving, it has reached its maximum saturation point. As far as your left-over herbs after extraction or infusion being “dead” is also not possible. Your menstruum cannot pull out more than half of what is floating in it, it is going to be a 50/50 balance. I wouldn’t make another tincture or infused oil from but there is plenty of life left to be still use full even if just tossed in the garden or fed to the farm animals. My dogs specifically get the comfrey leftovers because of the benefits, they can smell it from a mile away and start drooling!
An herb extracted into alcohol has the longest shelf life 20 years. If finished tincture is stored properly in glass Amber or Cobalt colored jars placed in a cool dark area. Made with fresh or dried herbs in 80-100 proof alcohol for a minimum of 6 weeks up to a year it won’t be stronger but is fine to leave until ready for use, I’ve found 2-year-old ones that were perfect. Average internal dosage ranges from 10 drops to 80 drops or ½ dropper to 4 droppers, 1-3 times daily. Can be put in a spray bottle to use topically one example from Dr. Patrick Jones for Homegrown Herbalist is Hops and Teasel tincture makes a great topical pain reliever! For acute onset put tincture under the tongue and hold for 30 seconds, for maintenance it may be mixed with beverage of choice. Start with the lowest dose until you find what works for you, it is a very wide range! One dropper is one full squeeze of bulb NOT a full pipette or single drop, there are VERY few herbs you take by the single drop, a couple of examples are Poke Root can damage kidneys or Lobelia can cause vomiting.
Folk method- Flowers and greens 1 part dry ground herb to 4 parts alcohol. Roots, seed, bark 1 part dry ground herb to 5 parts alcohol Fresh finely chopped herbs, loosely fill jar 2/3 full and fill to top with alcohol. Leave in a dark cool area for a minimum of 6 weeks....I don't shake my infusions or extractions much, some suggest shaking daily. Like I said the use of plants has been around since man you will find many ways of doing things. Do what works best for you.
Infused oils are made with mostly dry herbs steeped in oil. I will add information on using fresh herbs in oil. Most common oil is organic extra virgin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil is packed with amazing benefits and is shelf stable for 2-3 years, if a high quality and stored properly can last much longer. Store finished infusion in glass Amber or Cobalt colored jars placed in a cool dark area. You can use your infused oils in salves, balms, hair treatment, lip care, even use in dinner as salad dressing, and marinades…. remember if you wouldn’t eat it don’t wear it. Some do use oils internally a dosage of infused oil is ½ to 2 teaspoons 1-3 times daily. If you want to cook with your oils use a high heat oil like avocado oil but you will lose a lot of the medicinal properties with heat. The list of uses is huge!
Folk Method- Flowers and greens- dried rough ground, filled to 2/3 and fill to top with oil of choice. For roots, bark, seeds, dried fruit, the harder denser herbs fill jar 1/2 way to top and fill to top with oil of choice.
Slow Cold Infusion Method-place jar in a dark cool area for 6 weeks, you can leave the herb in oil longer until ready to use. I’ve left or forgotten many for over a year.
Quick Heat Method-for a faster infusion you can apply heat. I keep heat below 120 degrees to maintain herbal constituents. A couple of methods are using a double boiler, a dehydrator, oven if you can set that low. I prefer the crockpot set on keep warm, filled with water and a cloth placed between the crock and jars. Some say you can achieve an infused oil in 24 hours or less I prefer 3 days and I will usually let sit for an additional week after removing from crockpot.
Herbs that are extracted in raw apple cider vinegar and raw honey. Oxymels have been around for thousands of years but recently have become popular because of “fire cider” an immune-boosting oxymel. Just like a tincture or glycerite, you can use any herbs for any ailment to make your remedies. Store your finished oxymel in a glass Amber or Cobalt jar with a plastic lid or parchment paper between contents and lid, vinegar will rust metal lids. Stored properly it will be shelf stable for 2 years, even longer in the fridge. It won't go “bad” but will lose strength, use that nose. A dose of oxymel is ½-2 tablespoons 1-3 times a day. Oxymels make fantastic vinaigrettes and marinades, my oldest swears by my immune boost oxymel, he lovingly calls it “the steak marinade”
Folk Method- You can use fresh, dried or a combination for making oxymels. You want your jar to be 1/2 to 3/4 full of finely chopped or grated herbs depending on dry or fresh, fresh is fuller. The vinegar-to-honey ratio is completely up to you, you can even do 100% vinegar. I prefer 1 part honey 6-8 parts vinegar and it’s a 50/50 if I add the honey at the beginning or once it's strained. You will fill to the top with chosen menstruum, plastic lid or parchment paper to avoid rusty lids. Place in a ,dark cool area for at least 4 weeks up to once again I’ve found ones in the back of a cupboard that was infusing for 6 months and it was perfect.
Herbs extracted in a mix of vegetable glycerine and water. Although they are not as strong as tinctures they are a great alternative for children and adults that want to avoid alcohol. Store finished glycerite in glass Amber or Cobalt colored jar in dark cool area. Stored properly a glycerite will be shelf stable for 1-2 years. A dose of glycerite is ½ to 2 tablespoons 1-3 times daily.
Folk Method- Fresh herbs are best for Glycerites, with fresh no water is added. Chop and muddle your herbs well, fill jar loosely to 2/3 full and fill to top with glycerine. For dried herbs you will fill jar 1/3 full add 1 part water to rehydrate herb for an hour after absorbed add 3 parts glycerine.
Is made with fresh or dried herbs and raw honey. It is an infused honey. Depending on what you are using depends on if you can strain out. You do not want to heat your honey too high, 120 degrees or you will destroy the natural benefits and raw honey is PACKED with benefits! I just work around or with the herbs. One of our favorites is jalapeño infused honey, fill jar ¼ with dehydrated jalapeños and fill with honey. After 8 weeks you will have some amazing flavored honey.
Folk method- For dried herbs fill 1/3 for fresh 2/3 jar and fill remainder with honey. Place in cool dark area, flipping weekly to help move honey and herb around. I don't remove herbs when done we just eat them or things like cloves we drop in tea.
Teas are a very important way to use herbs daily. Many of your needed vitamins and minerals are more available through water infusion. You can do a cold infusion with flowers and greens 4 hours overnight. For a hot water infusion with flowers and greens bring water to boil pour over herbs and cover to trap all the volatile oils, your herbal constituents from escaping for 5-10 minutes. 1-4 cups a day is an average daily dose.
Folk method-Hot 2 teaspoons dried herb in 12 oz water, 2 tablespoons fresh herb to 12 oz water. Cover let steep 5-10 minutes. Cold take 1/3-2/3 cups dried herbs place in 64 oz, half gallon jar, fill with water and let sit 4hr-overnight, kept refrigerated it will last 2-3 days.
A water extraction for roots, seeds, bark, dried berries, the harder and denser plant materials. You will lightly simmer plant material covered for 10 minutes and let sit an additional 10 minutes with lid on, keep that steam trapped! 1-3 cups is an average daily dose.
Folk method-Hot 1-2 teaspoon dried herb in 12 oz water, 2 tablespoon fresh herb to 12 oz water. Cold take 1/3-2/3 cups dried herbs place in 64 oz, half gallon jar, fill with water and let sit overnight, kept refrigerated will last 2-3 days.
Is made with dried or fresh herbs. Dried powdered herb slightly moistened to a paste and applied topically. Fresh herbs pulverized, small amount of water at times and applied topically. Secure with a cloth or bandage.
Is a highly concentrated, volatile oil that is extracted from a plant using steam distillation. I only use a few different essential oils, one is oil of oregano I will add information about it on the page for oregano. I do not make myself but highly recommend everyone have a bottle of oil of oregano in their apothecary. I think essential oils are great but I choose to focus on forms anyone can make in a basic kitchen. Be VERY cautious where you purchase your essential oils, there is a TON of chemical filled junk out there.
