Is it “sav” or “salve”? How is it supposed to be pronounced? Let me fill you in on a few bits of information and you decide how you say it. The word salve has multiple origins, mainly being of Latin root, root meaning the place something begins at, and Germanic origin, origin meaning where something is from.
In Latin root salve is thought to come from salvus, meaning “generally safe, unhurt and well” and salveo meaning “to be well, in good health” and is used as a greeting.
In Germanic origin the word salve is thought to come from the Old English word sealf meaning “healing ointment” and the Old High German word salba meaning “oily substance”.
The earliest known use of the word “salve” as a verb meaning a medicinal oil applied to skin for the purpose of healing it,
is pre-1150 AD.
In all the above instances the L was and still is pronounced around the world that way. Only in the US and only in the last 80-100 years has the L become silent. It came about in the 1910 with the Flexner Report, it was essentially an attack on God’s creation, our knowledge and faith in His remedies. It was then the number of American medical schools went from approximately 210 to 60 by 1915 with the complete removal of teaching herbal remedies to focus on synthetic, lab created medicine. Sponsored by the Carnagie’s and Rockefeller’s, an entire other discussion for another day I will get to, if interested in researching use a different search engine besides the main big ones you will not find much on them.
I pronounce the L. Most of my mentors do. It is an ancient remedy that has been and still is pronounced with an L.
Only in the US will you hear “sav.”
What is a salve? Salve is a beneficial oil and beeswax, nothing fancy and can be made in any old kitchen.
So how do you make salve? Salves can vary in thickness, but a salve is meant to absorb into your skin unlike a balm, coming soon, which is meant to be a barrier of protection. Salves range from 1 part beeswax to 4-7 parts infused oil, I usually do mine 1 to 4. So if I have 8 ounces of oil I want 2 ounces of beeswax. It does not vary much if you choose to add things like Shea butter unless you are using it in a larger amount, 40% or more decrease your beeswax.
Couple of things I prefer to do when making salves. Always add 10-15% castor oil in, it is proven to penetrate your body up to 4 inches. I always try to use glass only, there are 3 BPA free plastic containers I use chapstick, mini balm, and deodorant no metal. Too many chemicals that leach, we don’t need to be micro-dosing ourselves with poison. I add vitamin E oil for skin health but also as a preservative, about 2.5 ml, ½ teaspoon, per 5 oz total weight of salve. Watch out for synthetic vitamin E it is everywhere and there is literally one letter difference in how it is commonly labeled. Naturally occurring vitamin E is d-alpha-tocopherol synthetic is dl-alpha-tocopherol.
Measure ingredients, I put any essential oils not to be confused with infused oils, with castor oil and things like menthol crystals kept aside, you will add it all in last. Place beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter like substances in a double boiler, glass bowl in a pot works just as well, and melt. Once melted add remaining oils set to low temp, we don’t want to mess with our herbal constituents. Once fully blended and melted turn off, add EO and castor mix thoroughly and pour into containers. Wait until completely cooled before capping to avoid condensation. There is no specific recipe to make a salve, learn about the herbs, infuse your oils and waxes, and then start creating your own remedies it REALLY is that simple! If you feel like you’ve “messed up” your salve you can re-melt at low temperature and make needed adjustments.
